Floriade’s signature blooms are to be spread across Canberra’s suburbs once again this year, with the announcement that ‘Floriade Community’ is to return.
Announced by the Minister for Tourism and Special Events, Andrew Barr, eligible community groups and organisations are invited to apply before 2 April to add some extra colour to the city during Spring.
“Floriade Community has quickly become a much-loved part of this major event, fostering local creativity, innovation, participation and recognition of the wonderful work our community groups do,” Mr Barr said.
“It also helps to stimulate the local economy by driving business to nearby cafes, shops and other businesses,” he said.
“The Floriade Community program will provide bulbs and annuals to successful applicants to plant and maintain in their local area.”
Mr Barr said locations must be visible to a large number of Canberrans who could enjoy the blooms in their day-to-day life and cover an area of at least 10sqm in total with a planting density of 40 bulbs per sqm.
He said this could include garden beds, pots or wheelbarrows at local shops, churches or community centres.
“In 2022, Floriade Community distributed 300,000 bulbs and annuals to over 100 community groups throughout Canberra,” Chief Minister Barr said.
“This included 150,000 bulbs and 150,000 annuals.”
Mr Barr said the initiative would complement the spectacular floral displays in Commonwealth Park managed by the Floriade team.
