Canberra Hospital’s new power a national first

The Territory is once again leading the nation in climate action, announcing that Canberra Hospital’s new emergency and critical care facility is to be an all-electric building.

Highlighting the initiative, Canberra Health Services (CHS) said the new building would help minimise the carbon footprint of Canberra Hospital, improve its green star rating and support the ACT’s target of net zero emissions by 2045.

“Once operational, this initiative will mitigate the release of an estimated 1,886 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year; the equivalent of taking 760 cars off Canberra roads annually,” CHS said.

“Hospitals are big consumers of energy and resources; and generate significant amounts of waste,” it said.

“What can we do to offset that?”

Along with being fuelled by renewable energy, CHS said the Campus Hospital Expansion would retrofit existing buildings that currently had carbon emitting building systems, transition fleet vehicles to electric vehicles, and increase soft landscaping across the Campus to improve permeability, cool the Campus and reduce heat island effect.

It said the expansion would also increase canopy cover beyond the Government’s 30 per cent target, improve the open space network to support sustainable behaviour on Campus, and respond to the impacts of climate change and weather events in building designs.
