Canberra is celebrating Children’s Week this week by focusing on the talents, accomplishments and abilities of its youngsters while reinforcing the right of every child to a healthy and happy childhood.
Minister for Children, Youth and Families, Rachel Stephen-Smith said Children’s Week gave Canberra’s community the opportunity to support children across the world and consider the future of Canberra’s children and young people.
“This year’s focus is on children’s health, drawing on Article 24 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.
“Children have the right to good quality health care, clean water, nutritious food and a clean environment.”
She said the Government supported the ACT Children’s Week committee to administer grants to groups, organisations and schools to host activities and events during the week.
“I’m encouraging Canberrans to participate in activities across our city to celebrate Children’s Week and support the rights and wellbeing of children,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.
She said ACT Playgroups’ 19th Annual PlayFest was held on Tuesday (22 October) in Cook where Family Centres along with the Child Development Service hosted a stall focusing on free play for kids including playdough sculptures and Connect and Construct Block games.
The Week continues until Sunday (27 October) and a 20-page program of events can be accessed at this PS News link.
