The Environment and Planning Directorate is encouraging Canberra cafes to sign up to a reusable coffee cup scheme to be rolled out later this year.
Announced by the Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury, the scheme will allow customers to participate in a swap-and-go model at participating cafes.
Mr Rattenbury said the new scheme would be delivered by Green Caffeen following a successful tender process.
“Canberra is full of coffee connoisseurs – and we have some of the best cafes in the country,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“That’s why today we’re encouraging cafes to get involved in our upcoming reusable coffee cup scheme trial,” he said.
“While more Canberrans are doing their bit for the planet by choosing reusable coffee cups, this new scheme will make it easier than ever for Canberrans to choose a reusable option when they forget their reusable cup.”
Mr Rattenbury said the scheme would be free to both cafes and customers and those local businesses who participated would have access to a toolkit to help them promote their involvement in it.
“Australia throws out 2.7 million coffee cups every single day, so it is important that we limit our use of single use cups wherever we can – doing our bit by people and planet,” Mr Rattenbury said.
