By Suzi Moon, Pirates Press Records 2021.
Suzi Moon is a punk performer who has been active in the LA music scene for a number of years and Call The Shots is her debut solo EP.
She started her musical career as a 15-year-old in 2011 when she joined her elder sister’s famed punk outfit Civit.
Civit went on to record several low volume EPs for the Princessmut, Callgirl and Disaster labels before recording two well received albums for Hellcat Records.
Civit toured with the likes of Social distortion, The Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly.
All this occurred before Suzi turned 21 and after Civit went on hiatus Suzi Moon formed her own band, Turbulent Hearts, that quickly gained a reputation for their fierce performances and Moon’s ferocious truth-telling lyrics.
Moon then went on to form L.A. Machina, a garage/punk female power trio that released a memorable, and sought after, EP for Alternative Tentacles before the band exploded in late 2020.
So, although Call The Shots is credited as Moon’s debut EP by Pirates Press Records Suzi is by no means a novice.
She’s already cemented her status as one of punk rock’s most vibrant and talented performers.
Call The Shots is a three track EP consisting of lead single, I’m Not A Man, along with Special Place In Hell and Nuthin’ To Me.
It’s classic Moon: hard hitting, lyrically powerful, energetic and bold. This is punk at its best.
I’m Not A Man is a great feminist manifesto presented with all the upfront balls and energy of a young Suzi Quatro.
Special Place in Hell contains some Divinyls DNA in its musical structure, particularly in the vamped guitar backing.
It’s a blast back to the 80s.
Punk done well is exhilarating and Suzi Moon is one of the genre’s best exponents.
