The Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement has invited the State’s Aboriginal people and communities to have their say about plans to establish statues and monuments recognising Aboriginal leaders.
The Commissioner, Roger Thomas said he wanted input that would provide ideas about the Aboriginal leaders and heroes of South Australia who should be recognised for their outstanding and significant contribution and achievements to the Aboriginal community and to the State.
“The statues and monuments at the centre of our towns and cities are almost exclusively about the history of those who colonised Australia, and of recent times are mostly about non-Aboriginal people,” Dr Thomas said.
“Recognising the valuable achievements and contribution made by South Australian Aboriginal people will help to educate and inspire our current and future generations.”
He said he would be undertaking a State-wide engagement with Aboriginal leaders and stakeholders over the coming months.
“This will include face-to-face conversations and a questionnaire for community members to provide their views through YourSAy and the Commissioner’s website,” Dr Thomas said.
“Written submissions can also be made and we are planning a survey that will be available either electronically or in paper, by contacting my office.”
