The Department of Home Affairs has released a discussion paper on a new strategy for keeping organisations and families safe online, and has invited public comment.
Australia’s 2020 Cyber Security Strategy builds on the foundations of the 2016 Cyber Security Strategy.
Minister for Home Affairs, Peter Dutton said the new strategy would be developed in close collaboration with industry, research partners and community groups.
“Strong collaboration and partnerships are vital to ensure this strategy is well positioned to tackle the cyber security challenges we face as a nation,” Mr Dutton said.
He said the 2016 Cyber Security Strategy had strengthened Australia’s national cyber security footing, deepened its engagement with industry and positioned it as a prominent regional leader in cyber security.
Minister for Defence, Senator Linda Reynolds said the development of a new strategy would help Australia combat increasing and evolving cyber threats.
“In 2018 alone, around one in three Australian adults were affected by cyber-crime,” Senator Reynolds said.
“The Australian Cyber Security Centre sees hundreds of reports on a daily basis from businesses, families and individuals who have fallen victim to scams, ransomware, sophisticated fraud or the theft of their intellectual property.”
She said the strategy would support the continuing work of ensuring Australia was the safest place to connect online.
The deadline for submissions is 1 November, and the 32-page discussion paper, Australia’s 2020 Cyber Security Strategy: A Call for Views, can be accessed at this PS News link.
