The Territory’s 2020-2021 Budget has promised safer roads, an organised COVID-19 vaccine rollout and specific benefits for all five regions of the national capital.
The Government has also committed itself to expanding bulky waste services to more households and rolling out the Sustainable Households Scheme with zero-interest loans of up to $15,000 to help with the costs of rooftop solar, household battery storage and efficient electric appliances.
Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said mobile device detection cameras were to be introduced in the ACT in the second half of 2021 to target driver distraction and improve road safety.
Mr Steel said driver distraction had become a major safety issue on Territory roads, with drivers who looked at their phones three times more likely to be involved in a crash, and those who texted and checked emails 10 times more likely to crash.
He said an extensive education campaign would be conducted with the cameras’ roll-out and there would be a three-month no-fine warning period when the cameras were first deployed.
In Gungahlin, the Budget is to deliver new and expanded schools, a feasibility study for a walk-in health centre and the Gungahlin District Tennis Centre in Amaroo.
Belconnen has been promised a feasibility study for a walk-in Health Centre in West Belconnen, an upgrade to the intersection on Owen Dixon Drive and more services at Calvary Public Hospital.
Central Canberra is to see the start of Stage 2A of the Light Rail, a feasibility study for a Walk-in Health Centre in the Inner South and a feasibility study to improve Parkes Way.
Woden, Weston Creek and Molonglo are to receive a new walk-in Health Centre, bulky waste collections by July and construction of the John Gorton Drive extension as well as a bridge across the Molonglo River.
In Tuggeranong, the Budget has committed to delivering upgrades to the Monaro Highway, a feasibility study for a walk-in Health Centre in South Tuggeranong and playground upgrades.
