The ACT Parks and Conservation Service has launched a new competition to encourage local residents and visitors to experience the Territory’s bushwalking trails and then share their experiences.
Director of the ACT Parks and Conservation Service, Daniel Iglesias said the ACT had some excellent hiking and bushwalking options, and the Service’s Winter Walks competition would demonstrate that despite the cold weather, this was the perfect time to get out and immerse oneself in the great outdoors.
“We want Canberrans and visitors alike to get out and about in our local reserves this winter,” Mr Iglesias said.
He said it was the perfect way to get 30 minutes of daily exercise and enjoy the many benefits of getting in touch with nature.
“We then want people to share their experiences with a short video or photo, tagging our ACT Parks and Conservation Facebook page [@ACTParks] and Twitter page [@ACT_Parks],” Mr Iglesias said.
He said the entry that best encapsulated a winter walk would win a weekend away at Namadgi’s home under the stars, while runners-up would receive two annual passes to Tidbinbilla.
Mr Iglesias said the competition would be judged by ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and Environment, Kate Auty.
He said there were many ways people could appreciate the Territory’s natural assets.
“You can explore our famous Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve by taking a short stroll on the Cascade trail or challenge yourself with a hike on the Devil’s Gap trail,” Mr Iglesias said.
“A stone’s throw away from your own backyard there’s the Molonglo River Reserve, the wildlife at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands, and Mulligans Flat Nature Reserve, where Australia’s only mainland bettongs can be found.”
The competition closes on 8 August.
