Bushfire crisis help sparks gratitude

The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA) has expressed its gratitude and given thanks to the international allies who provided life-saving support during the 2019-20 Black Summer bushfires.

At a ceremony on Tuesday (15 February), ACT ESA presented representatives from the USA, Canada, New Zealand and the United Arab Emirates with a copy of the volunteer-produced book Ablaze, in recognition of their country’s actions throughout the season.

“During one of the worst fire seasons on record, the four nations sent personnel and resources to support Australian firefighters in a time of crisis,” ACT ESA said.

“The event was an opportunity to formally say thank you for the contributions of our international allies,” it said.

The Agency said the book was produced by the ACT Volunteer Brigades Association and offered a volunteer’s perspective on the 2019-20 season.

It said Ablaze was a showcase of more than 700 photos from the frontline, “telling stories of the generosity, commitment and compassion experienced by firefighters and the Canberra community”.

The Volunteer Brigades Association said the photo-journal, coffee-table book was printed locally and proceeds from its sale went back to the Association, a volunteer not-for-profit group.

“Fighting bushfires is a team effort, so the book also recognises the contributions of other emergency first responder services and Agencies,” the Association said.
