Bulky waste collections have officially started in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin, marking yesterday (15 July) as a first for the Canberra community.
MLA for Brindabella, Joy Burch said that since bookings opened on 1 July the Territory had scheduled over 1,100 collections.
“Which is a great uptake of the service and shows just how keen Canberra residents are to be able to access a free annual bulky waste pick-up,” Ms Burch said.
She said Forde, Moncrieff, Conder, Bonython, Bonner, Casey, Nicholls, Calwell, Gungahlin and Amaroo were the 10 suburbs with the most bookings, but overall they were split evenly between Gungahlin and Tuggeranong.
“The household items that have been listed for collection the most include furniture, timber, scrap metal, appliances and electrical equipment,” Ms Burch said.
She said the service was currently available to all residents in Tuggeranong and Gungahlin as well as concession card holders in all ACT suburbs.
“It will be rolled out across the ACT in a staged approach similar to how the green bin service was provided,” she said.
“Each household will receive one free collection per year of up to two cubic metres which allows them to get rid of a trailer load of goods.”
She said the contractor providing the service, Suez, had partnered with The Salvation Army and Vinnies to identify items that could be sold through their shopfronts, keeping valuable items out of landfill.
