The Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria (RBGV) is to host a range of free events for kids, families and plant and art lovers.

Director and Chief Executive of RBGV, Tim Entwisle said the free guided and self-guided outdoor experiences included augmented reality art exhibitions, historic nature trails, sentimental children’s theatre and audio tours.

“These programs have been designed to encourage families to venture outdoors, slow down and explore the beauty and detail of their natural surrounds,” Mr Entwisle said.

“It is a fun way to learn and spend time with loved ones,” he said.

Mr Entwisle said one highlight of the summer holiday event program was Seeing the Invisible, an international exhibition of contemporary artworks created with augmented reality technology, featuring 13 immersive virtual works by established and emerging artists including Ai Weiwei and Refik Anadol.

He said visitors would also be able to enjoy the Australian Shakespeare Company’s Wind in the Willows at Melbourne Gardens from 18 December to 30 January.

“This critically acclaimed outdoor theatre production delivers music, songs and laughs,” Mr Entwisle said.

“With surprises for children and adults, this is interactive theatre at its best.”

He said the summer program also included Sonica Botanica: Stories & Sounds from the Gardens; a special edition Seek and Find Card by Melbourne artist, Claire Mosley; Flora and the Baron, a guided audio tour with the theatrical version of Baron Ferdinand von Mueller – the Gardens’ eccentric first Director; and PAUSE, a chance for people to leave behind intense workloads and hectic schedules.
