A new review into border permits has been launched by the Department of Home Affairs with the aim of simplifying and streamlining processes for industry.
Minister for Home Affairs, Peter Dutton said the whole-of-Government review would identify opportunities to reduce Government intervention, remove barriers for international trade and reduce the regulatory burden for industry.
Mr Dutton said the review was a way of modernising international trade flows across Australia’s border.
“Through trade modernisation we aim to create a future international trade system for Australia that is seamless, digital, automated and user-friendly,” Mr Dutton said.
“Australia’s international trade regulatory environment is complex and involves over 30 permit issuing authorities and Government Agencies.”
He said that after consultation with Government Agencies and industry, and reviews of Australia’s international trade system, it was clear there was a need to look at how international trade could be streamlined.
“The review’s terms of reference specify the imported and exported goods that are subject to the review and are accessible on the Department’s website at www.homeaffairs.gov.au, and stakeholders will be able to make submissions through the website,” Mr Dutton said.
He said the review is subject to a public consultation process and its outcomes will be reported to the Government by the end of the year.
The review’s Terms of Reference can be accessed at this PS News link and the Department will accept stakeholder comments until 30 April.
