The West Belconnen green waste drop-off facility on Parkwood Road is to be permanently closed from the end of this month (30 June).

The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate said the closure was needed to enable the continued development and rehabilitation of the Ginninderry estate.

“Canberra Sand and Gravel, who is licenced by the ACT Government to operate on the site until 30 June 2021, was informed in June 2020 that the licence would not be extended,” the Directorate said.

“Government is currently conducting a review of waste facilities and infrastructure in the north of Canberra which will inform future solutions for green waste drop off for northside residents,” it said.

The Directorate said Canberrans were eligible for free fortnightly green bin collections and households which signed up for the service would receive a 240-litre green bin.

“A one-off $50 fee applies for the bin, with no charge for concession card holders,” it said.

The Directorate said green waste could also be disposed of for free at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre on Mugga Lane; through paid commercial green waste businesses located in Mitchell; and through trash pak operators who collected from residences.

Further information on how to correctly dispose of items in the ACT can be accessed on the Directorate’s Recyclopaedia website at this PS News link.
