The Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate (TCCS) has announced that the Belconnen Bikeway construction has passed the halfway point with 2.5km of the 4.7km bikeway now laid with asphalt.

“The new 4.7-kilometre bikeway will improve accessibility, provide safer and faster commutes and deliver more opportunities for weekend recreation,” the Directorate said.

“It will include both shared and separated cycling and pedestrian facilities,” it said.

“The new bikeway will deliver a route that makes it easier for people to access the Belconnen Town Centre, providing better links to the surrounding suburbs.”

TCCS said that once complete, the cycleway would include 1,400 metres of shared path; 1,475 metres of pedestrian-only path; 2,141 metres of cyclist-only path; and 440 metres on-road cycleway through the old busway on Joynton Smith Drive.

“Two hundred trees and approximately 4,000 shrubs will also be planted along the route,” it said.

The Directorate said the bikeway would start on Coulter Drive in Florey and continue along the old busway on Joynton Smith Drive to the Belconnen Town Centre, then along Emu Bank through to the University of Canberra and onto Haydon Drive via College Street.

It said that while the Belconnen bike path was still under construction Canberrans in the meantime could access the Territory’s extensive network of shared paths and bike routes.
