The Australian Trade Commission, Austrade, has launched a new digital platform on the Chinese social media outlet WeChat, the first to be developed by a non-Chinese Government trade and investment agency.

The new platform was launched by the Chief Executive of Austrade, Stephanie Fahey who said it was designed to be an invaluable tool for Australian companies during the first China International Import Expo in Shanghai now on.

The Expo has attract Chinese buyers in the thousands with more than 200 Australian brands represented.

“The program will be a permanent channel for Australian businesses looking to export — or grow their existing businesses — in China,” Dr Fahey said.

“It provides information on Australian products and services, promotional and trade events, commercial and investment opportunities and industry specific insights. It will also support the education and tourism sectors.”

She said there was a need to reach out to both business and the consumer in China.

“This is an innovative way of achieving both aims,” Dr Fahey said.

“The program makes it easier for users to access information on Australia, receive notifications of new stories and insights and register for Austrade business events.”

WeChat is currently one of the world’s largest standalone mobile apps, with more than one billion active monthly users.
