Q: I’m looking at updating my Mazda BT50.
I’m looking at either a Toyota HiLux or Ford Ranger, so what do you recommend?
Stuart Rogers
It’s the Ranger for me, by a fair margin. But a lot of utes are now getting significant updates, led by the Toyota HiLux, and I think you should have a close look at the Isuzu D-Max which is looking really good after a ground-up revision.
Q: The work vehicle is a Holden Commodore from 2016 and it’s about to be replaced.
My choices are a Ford Everest Ambiente 4WD with bull-bar and fog-lights, a Toyota Kluger GX AWD and a Hyundai Sante Fe Elite AWD.
The vehicles are upgraded with a police pack , servicing and fuel are not an issue.
I do predominately city driving , although operational response to regional areas during summer and winter are required.
Ground clearance is a consideration as regional areas can require off-road access.
Steve D
A: Go for the Santa Fe. The Everest is based on a ute (Ranger) so can be a bit agricultural and the Kluger is a former benchmark that has been overtaken by the Korean contenders in recent years. You will find the Hyundai is surprisingly luxurious and will do all the jobs you need.
Q: I had a massive accident recently and my Audi A5 was a write-off.
The only reason I’m here is because of the safety features of the Audi, so I am going to buy another one.
There aren’t many around but I have narrowed it down to two.
One is with a dealer, an A5 diesel 2015 six-cylinder with 95,000 kilometres and the other is a private sale A5 2016 four-cylinder with 50,000.
Both are around the same price, both one owner with full service history, so which one would you go for?
Liz G
A: It’s an easy decision – go for the petrol car, because diesel is not needed and the A5 is more refined with the petrol engine. The petrol-engined car also has fewer kilometres. But make sure you get a full pre-purchase inspection by your local motoring club.
Q: I am looking to buy a medium-sized SUV and have been impressed with the Peugeot 3008.
I like both the Allure and the GT, especially the design both inside and out, and prefer it over a Kia or Hyundai.
I would appreciate your thoughts.
Ray L
A: It’s not one of the mainstream models but is nicely designed and a great, relaxing drive. If it’s what you want, there is no reason not to go ahead.
Q: What do you think of the 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero Sport Exceed?
I need to do city driving but also some north-Queensland touring.
No kids but I like large cars and also need to tow a small boat.
Peter G B
A: I just test drove one and was completely underwhelmed. The Pajero Sport is big and is a top seller in class, but only because of the price. Get a Hyundai or a Kia instead. Yes, seriously.
Q: I would like your opinion on Chinese and Korean four-wheel drive twin cabs.
I’m thinking Haval, Great Wall and others.
I currently have a 2011 Toyota HiLux twin cab diesel with 260,000 on the clock, so how do these others compare?
Thanks, Phil P
A: The Chinese utes are cheap. Their resale is totally unproven. I have heard solid reports, but only from people who have bought on price. They will be way better than an ancient HiLux with those kilometres, but test drive a Ford Ranger – the current class leader – to get a proper perspective.
