Q: I have a Mazda3 car and I’m looking to purchase something with the same ‘guts’ but that is higher up due to a back issue.

What would you suggest as value for money and a car that is reliable?

Ange K

A: You are spoiled for choice but if you like your Mazda3 then I think the best move is the new CX-30. It’s a very classy device, better than the under-done and over-priced CX-3, but not as big as the family-first CX-5. It’s one of the most impressive arrivals of 2020.

Q: I have a BMW X5 diesel at present and was thinking to change over to an X3 petrol model.

I hear there is a new model soon?

I want a car with boot space and have loved the X5, but it is quite a big car and a new apartment we will be moving into makes it hard to manoeuvre it into a car lift. By the time you have, the lift has gone. Any other suggestions?

Wendy M

A: The new X3 is already out and about, I’ve driven it and it’s very impressive. It’s part of a major product renaissance by BMW and definitely a good choice. There is no need for a diesel engine these days, as small-capacity petrol turbo engines give great economy with good performance.

Q: I am in the market to buy a secondhand medium-sized SUV.

I’m looking for something to transport a new child and two medium-sized dogs.

I’d like to have one that includes all of the safety features, was around 2 to 3 years old with approximately 50,000 kilometres on the clock.

After looking around, the Renault Koleos Zen seems to fit the requirements and is reasonably priced. What’s your opinion of this car?

Phillip N

A: The Koleos is under-appreciated and it’s also a Nissan under the skin, so the basics are good. If it’s the one you like then it should be fine.

Q: I am interested in buying a secondhand Lexus SUV to use around town and tow a Jayco Swan van around the country.

Which model would you suggest and about what price should I pay?

Mark D

A: I would not recommend a Lexus for towing, although they are fine around town. About the only Lexus model that would work is the RX but it won’t be cheap.

Q: I’m wondering which small hatchback you recommend?

I currently have a 2016 Ford Focus Trend, which I like, however I’ve noticed that the Focus isn’t usually recommended by the car experts.
I wouldn’t want anything smaller than the Focus and fuel economy is important as I’m on the country roads to babysit grandchildren every week.

Del T

A: The Focus is now focussed on sporty drivers, so not really best for you. If you want a car and not an SUV, and it will have benefits in fuel economy and a quieter cabin on country roads, then the Hyundai i30 is a smart choice and good value.

Q: We intend to replace our Mitsubishi Lancer with a small SUV or hatch.

We like the Mazda CX-3, but are there any other cars you would suggest we look at as well?

Merrin W

A: The CX-3 is very small and getting quite old. It’s also over-priced, considering it is based on the Mazda2 and not the Mazda2, and has a baby boot. I would put the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Venue ahead of it by a fair margin.
