The latest eNews from ArtsACT details a series of exhibitions and events drawing on this week’s NAIDOC Week celebrations to continue honouring the theme “Because of Her, We Can”.
On Saturday, a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures will take place at Kingsford Smith School, incorporating art and craft workshops, songs, stories, dance and ceremony, and featuring free and fun activities for the whole family.
Artist Brenda L. Croft, who has Gurindji/Malgnin/Mudburra and Anglo-Australian/Chinese/German/Irish heritage, has drawn on the NAIDOC Week theme to honour her mother, Dorothy Jean Croft (1938–2010), on the eightieth anniversary of her birth.
Croft’s “Museum of Motherhood” constructs a complex characterisation of a woman who was “witty, whip-smart and generous”.
The exhibition, Heart In Hand, takes place at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Gorman Arts Centre, from 13 July to 8 September.
Ilbijerri Theatre Company tells stories about what it means to be Indigenous in Australia today.
Infused with humour and heart, Which Way Home draws on writer Katie Beckett’s own memories of growing up with her single Aboriginal father.
Which Way Home takes place at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre on 18 July.
In an associated event, Canberra resident Jacob Keed (pictured) has launched an app, Nations Connect, allowing people to search for local elders, businesses and services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, including cultural services.
