The National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) is to open a free exhibition on the life and work of Australian actor Heath Ledger (pictured) in August.

Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures will arrive in Canberra on 10 August for a six-month season.

Chief Executive at the NSFA, Jan Müller said audiences would be able to explore a selection of film costumes and props, Mr Ledger’s own character research journals, celebrity portraits and acting awards, offering a rare insight into the man behind the camera.

She said she was delighted to reopen the NFSA’s exhibition space with this snapshot of Mr Ledger’s life.

“Widely recognised as one of the best actors of his generation, Heath captured the hearts of audiences around the world,” Ms Müller said.

“Yet acting was in fact only one of his many facets.”

She said through this exhibition fans would discover, and hopefully be inspired by, Ledger’s creative process and his passion for photography and the arts.

Ms Müller said Heath Ledger: A Life in Pictures was developed by the Western Australian Museum, in collaboration with the Ledger family.

She said following a highly successful season in Ledger’s native Perth, the NFSA would be bringing the exhibition to Canberra for its east coast premiere.

A program of screenings and talks will complement the exhibition for the duration of the season.
