The Australian Public Service Commission (APSC) has released an Australian Public Service (APS) Learning and Development Strategy and Action Plan.
The APSC said the Highly Capable, Future-Ready: APS Learning and Development Action Plan sought to enable the APS workforce to build the capability it needed to do its best work now and in the future.
The Commission said the Strategy and Action Plan, unveiled at the new APS Academy in Canberra in response to the Government’s Public Service Reform Agenda, were expected to change how the APS approached learning and development to deliver for the general public.
Commissioner for the Australian Public Service, Peter Woolcott said the Strategy set the vision for a highly capable and future-ready APS across four pillars of action: Capability; technology; governance; and culture.
Mr Woolcott said the Strategy would foster a culture of continuous learning, supporting workers to build the skills and knowledge needed to keep pace with the speed of change.
“The Strategy recognises APS employees are working in an environment where change is constant and workplace learning is a key lever for our success,” he said.
“To respond, we need to develop new skills, mindsets and capabilities.
“We do this best by learning from our work and through others every day, as well as by accessing resources including frameworks, methodologies, tools and templates, and through formal courses.”
Mr Woolcott said the Action Plan enabled APS learning and development leaders, practitioners and partners to enact the practical steps for the implementation of the Strategy over a five-year period.
“The APS Academy will act as the flagship initiative to give effect to the Learning and Development Strategy and Action Plan,” he said.
“We will connect the best of our Public Service knowledge, resources and experience to build APS capability,” Mr Woolcott said.
