Apprenticeship project gets the sack

The Department of Education and Training (DET) has announced that it has ceased work on its Australian Apprenticeship Management System (AAMS) project.

The Department said the project was intended to deliver a new IT system to replace the current Training and Youth Internet Management System (TYIMS), which supported Australian apprenticeships.

It said its decision to end the project followed a series of continuing delays in delivery, as well as testing with Australian Apprenticeship Support Network providers and State Training Authorities.

“The testing revealed significant capability gaps between the proposed AAMS product and users’ current needs and expectations,” DET said.

“The Department has therefore ceased work on the AAMS project rather than continue to invest in a system which ultimately may not have met the current business needs or future requirements of Australia’s apprenticeship and traineeship system.”

It said the decision did not alter the ability of employers to continue to hire, train and retain apprentices, and the current system would continue to operate.

It said it had commissioned an independent review of the AAMS project and accepted all the findings and recommendations made from it.

“We acknowledge and apologise that weaknesses in our project management practices contributed to this outcome,” DET said.

It said it would work closely with the Digital Transformation Agency (DTA) to ensure lessons learnt were well documented and that it would seek advice on how it could lift its capability for future projects.
