The Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) is calling for submissions to inform the development of a National Anti-Racism Framework.

Race Discrimination Commissioner Chin Tan said the Framework would be a long-term, central reference point to guide actions on anti-racism and equality by Government, non-Government organisations, business, communities and other sectors.

Commissioner Tan said the AHRC’s Concept Paper outlined proposed principles, strategies and outcomes that were to be further developed through scoping consultations and the submissions process.

“The Commission is seeking submissions from people with expertise and knowledge of anti-racism,” Commissioner Tan said.

“This includes people with lived experience of racism; First Nations peak and community organisations; migrant, refugee and settlement peak and community organisations; researchers; human rights agencies; and Government Agencies,” he said.

Commissioner Tan said the AHRC was accepting submissions until 15 December on guiding principles for the Framework; outcomes the Framework should seek to achieve; issues the Framework should engage with, including strategies for addressing these; and best practice examples of anti-racism initiatives.

The Race Discrimination Commissioner said the AHRC would accept submissions in any language and any format, including written, audio, video and images, subject to its Submissions Policy.

“We face many challenges on the path to eliminating racism from Australian society, but I am confident this ground-breaking Framework can give us a powerful new approach,” he said.

“I encourage everyone to have their say on the Framework and ensure their voices are heard,” Commissioner Tan said.
