Director: Peyton Reed, Marvel Studios, PG 117 Minutes.
One of Marvel’s latest superheros to hit the big screen is a miniscule character the size of an ant with superior strength and the ability to command an army of ants to help him stand up to his adversaries.
With the advent of ‘Ant – Man’ director Peyton Reed (‘Yes Man’) has clearly intended to complement those crusaders in the Marvel cinematic universe known as the Avengers and to demonstrate to viewers everywhere that size does not matter.
Reed starts his origin story by showing ex-con Scott Lang (Paul Rudd – ‘Admission’) being picked up from prison by former cell mate Luis (Mike Pena – ‘American Hustle’) before he rushes-off to see ex-wife Maggie (Judy Greer – ‘Tomorrowland’) and daughter Cassie (Abby Fortson – ‘Rated’).
In realising that he has obligations to Maggie for child-support, in particular in restoring his good name (for Cassie’s sake), Scott reluctantly agrees to Luis’s plan to rob the house of reclusive scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas – ‘Last Vegas’).
However, from this point Scott begins training as the Ant-Man under Pym and his daughter’s, Hope (Evangeline Lilly – ‘The Hobbit’), guidance with the aim of preventing Pym’s psychotic protégé Darren Cross (Corey Stoll – ‘Non – Stop’) from pursuing his evil intentions.
In taking on his new role, Scott must ultimately comes face to face with Cross’s own creation of a size-changing prototype (called Yellowjacket) and which poses a serious threat to himself and world security.
There is a great deal to enjoy in Reed’s cleverly crafted rendition of Marvel’s smallest superhero in readiness for the Ant-Man to join the ranks of the Avengers in upcoming adventures.
Apart from Rudd’s enjoyable portrayal of both characters (Scott Lang and Ant-Man), which he pulls off with much fun and humour, are the fascinating scenes he shares with the ants.
Furthermore one cannot overlook the stellar cast assembled, in particular Douglas’s skilful performance as the scientist, not to mention the chemistry exhibited between himself, Lilly and Rudd in many amusing scenes.
Reed has fashioned a thoroughly entertaining addition to Marvel’s range of superheroes due in no small way to the splendid special effects coupled with an appealing storyline that ensures Ant-Man is a pleasurable viewing experience.
