GHANA
Ghana’s Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has attacked what it describes as the Government’s politicisation of the Public Service.
Deputy General-Secretary of the NDC, Koku Anyidoho (pictured) said losing the Public Service to politics spelt doom for the nation.
His comments came after the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) complained about secret attempts to replace its members with so-called Special Assistants.
Executive Secretary of CLOGSAG, Issac Paul Bampoe-Addo accused some Ministers, especially Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, of replacing PS staff whom he had forced to take leave.
Mr Anyidoho said a future NDC Government would “rescue the Public Service” and kick out all the Special Assistants.
Meanwhile, an MP from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Essien has been rewarding the Public Service for their “contribution to development of the western region of Ghana”, where he has his constituency.
The Government workers received items including television sets, fridges, laptop computers and iPads.
The District Magistrate Court was presented with a motorbike and an airconditioner, while the Education and Health Directorates got three desk computers each.
Mr Essien said the handouts were to recognise the effort and the significant contribution the PS staff were making to bring progress to the district.
He also distributed sewing machines and dryers to 60 apprentice dressmakers and hairdressers who had completed their training.
“You will now be able to start your own businesses and become economically self-supporting,” Mr Essien said.
