AWM welcomes recognition

The naming of a new Federal electorate in the Australian Capital Territory after war historian and Australian War Memorial (AWM) founder, Charles Bean (pictured), has been welcomed by the current Director of the AWM.

Brendan Nelson said Mr Bean was one of the truly great Australians of the 20th century

“At Pozieres, France in July and August 1916 he was witness to 23,000 Australian casualties in just six weeks. A dying man asked him ‘will they remember me in Australia?’” Dr Nelson said.

“It was from there he conceived and resolved that he would build the finest memorial and museum to these men of the Australian Imperial Forces and the nurses — the Australian War Memorial.”

World-leading fibre to the kerb (FTTC) technology has been introduced as part of the rollout of the National Broadband Network (NBN).

According to the NBN, over the next few years a million premises around the country will be connected to high-speed broadband using FTTC.

It said FTTC could deliver the same 100Mbps speeds as fibre to the premise (FTTP) technology but at lower cost, in much less time and with less disruption to people’s property.

The closing date for submissions is 10 May and the ACMA’s 50-page consultation paper can be accessed at this PS News link.
