Union welcomes APS chief

The Community and Public Sector Union has reacted positively to the appointment of Peter Woolcott (pictured) as the next Australian Public Service Commissioner.

National Secretary of the union, Nadine Flood said Mr Woolcott’s appointment was a “welcome and plainly much needed change”.

“There’s never been so much need for someone in the job who knows and values the role of the Public Service,” Ms Flood said.

“I’ll be seeking to meet with Mr Woolcott as soon as possible.”


Hundreds contribute to APS review

Public submissions to the review of the Australian Public Service have closed with hundreds received.

Chair of the independent review, David Thodey said it had received 668 submissions of which 87 per cent were from individuals and 13 per cent from organisations.

“The majority of people have opted to have their submissions published (79 per cent),” Mr Thodey said.

“Approximately 40 per cent have already been published and can be read on our website now. More will be published every day.”

New award for defence industry

The new Defence Industry Service Commendation award recognises exceptional achievements within Australia’s defence industry.

It will be presented to high performing members of the defence industry as a way to recognise exceptional contributions supporting war fighters and defence exports.

The award provides an opportunity to recognise the work of both executives and project managers, as well as that of skilled tradespeople who have given their careers to the defence industry, such as welders and boilermakers.

Individuals and teams who have demonstrated superior achievement and devotion for the benefit of Australia’s defence capability are encouraged to nominate.


Advance sale for boats

The Department of Defence has announced that the Government of Trinidad and Tobago is to buy two Austal Cape Class Patrol Boats.

The vessels will be built in Western Australia and delivered by mid-2020 with the contract worth around $100 million.

The Cape Class Patrol Boats are already in use by the Australian Border Force and Royal Australian Navy.
