Icon opens Pumping Station
Icon Water is to host a tour of the Cotter Pumping Station on Friday, 20 April as part of the Canberra and Region Heritage Festival.
The tour will cover the methods used to supply water for the nation’s capital between 1912 and 1965.
Visitors can also learn more about the history of the Cotter River catchment, and the dams and pipes that have been supplying Canberrans with high-quality water for more than 100 years.
Visitors must wear long pants, long sleeves and closed flat shoes, as this is an active industrial site.
Registrations must be made by 16 April.
NCA all-clear for lake
The National Capital Authority (NCA) has announced that all areas of Lake Burley Griffin are now open.
This follows a reduction in both blue green algae and bacteria levels in all areas.
The NCA will continue to monitor lake water quality over coming weeks and lake users should look for warning signs indicating the current alert level at major water entry points.
Libraries close Anzac Day
Libraries ACT has announced that all branches and the ACT Heritage Library will be closed for the Anzac Day public holiday on 25 April.
Online services will be available, including downloading eBooks, eAudio, digital magazines and music, and searching, requesting and renewing items online.
Items can be returned using the return chutes located at each branch.
Bean seat applauded
The decision to name the new ACT Federal electorate after official war historian and Australian War Memorial founder, Charles Bean has been welcomed by the Director of the Memorial, Brendan Nelson.
“Charles Bean is one of the truly great Australians of the twentieth century,” Dr Nelson said.
“This is an immense recognition that is long overdue.”
Transport summit for ACT
The Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris has announced that Canberra is to host the 2019 Assembly of the Asia-Pacific Region of the International Association of Public Transport, the Union Internationale des Transports Publics (UITP).
“Canberra is at the forefront of public transport improvement in Australia and our city is a leader in the development of a flexible, integrated and sustainable transport network,” Ms Fitzharris said.
“The ACT Government will use the UITP Conference as another opportunity to position Canberra as an attractive place to live, work, invest and visit for delegates from a range of countries across the region.”
The event will host more than 200 delegates from across the Asia-Pacific region and will provide an opportunity for key meetings for senior public transport officials as well as technical tours of public transport in Canberra.
