Stamp marks first cricket tour
Australia Post has released a special stamp issue commemorating the 150th anniversary of the sporting achievements of the 1868 Aboriginal XI — the first cricket team from Australia to tour internationally.
The team, most of whom were Jardwadjali, Gunditjmara and Wotjobaluk men from the Western District of Victoria, equalled the playing record of its opponents, winning 14, losing 14 and drawing 19 of their 47 matches, played between May and October against local and county teams.
Philatelic Manager at Australia Post, Michael Zsolt said it was an extraordinary achievement by the players, all of whom, aside from the captain, had been playing the game of cricket only for a few years.
The domestic base-rate ($1) stamp, designed by Phil Ellett of Creative Ethos, incorporates player portraits from one of the few remaining photographs from the 1868 tour, from the National Library of Australia.
