Blundells’ Cottage closed

The National Capital Authority (NCA) has announced that Blundells’ Cottage on the shore of Lake Burley Griffin in Parkes is to be closed until September for landscape and other conservation works.

This will include works to interpret the original land uses and conservation of the slab building.

The NCA said the tiny 1860 worker’s dwelling had stood witness to a lot of changes in 157 years. The stone building itself underwent conservation works in 2017.


Tourist guide for industry

A comprehensive guide for how industry can best work with VisitCanberra across their social media channels has been compiled by the Agency.

In a statement, VisitCanberra said a page on its corporate website detailed the content that best performed on its channels, what content it looked to post and how to be considered for a feature on social media.

Police officers guilty of assault

An investigation by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) has resulted in criminal charges being laid against two ACT Police Officers.

The officers faced the ACT Magistrates Court charged with “joint commission Assault Occasioning Actual Bodily Harm”. They were found guilty of Common Assault.

The AFP said the charges remained before the court for sentencing and it would not be appropriate to make any further comment.


Car regos parked for a day

Access Canberra has announced that its online Rego.ACT service is to be offline this Saturday (5 May) for 12 hours from 7am.

During this time people will not be able access certain services online or via the contact centre, such as vehicle registration and driver’s licence renewal or the payment and dispute of infringements.

Access Canberra said the break was necessary to improve its service delivery and apologised in advance for any inconvenience.


ACT signs up to redress scheme

The ACT has signed up to a national agreement on Redress Scheme for child sexual abuse survivors.

It joins Victoria as the first jurisdictions to sign up to the Intergovernmental Agreement on the scheme which begins in July.

The Redress Scheme was a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutionalised Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

Through the scheme, survivors can access counselling and psychological services, a direct personal response from the institution where the abuse occurred and payments of up to $150,000.


Circle closure

Two northbound lanes on Vernon Circle in the city are to be closed this weekend (5/6 May) to ensure safety for the removal of a crane from the construction works at the ACT Law Courts Project.

Access Canberra said one northbound lane of Vernon Circle would remain open and the southbound lanes would not be affected.

The closures will be in place from 5 am Saturday to 6 pm Sunday with the lanes reopened earlier if the crane is removed ahead of time.

Barriers and warning signs will be erected.


Ginninderry project under way

Construction has begun on Canberra’s newest master planned development at Ginninderry.

The joint venture has awarded local civil engineering company, Huon Contractors a $30 million-plus contract to complete civil construction for the development’s first suburb, Strathnairn.

Huon will deliver road infrastructure and servicing for the first 350 dwellings associated with Stage One of the development.

Ginninderry is a joint venture between the Government (60 per cent) and the Riverview Pty. Ltd. (40 per cent) and will deliver approximately 11,500 dwellings over a 37-year period.
