ACT renewables reach world stage

The ACT is set to become the first jurisdiction outside Europe with a population of 100,000 or more to achieve 100 per cent renewable electricity.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said a new report from the Australia Institute has revealed that globally, only seven other jurisdictions with populations over 100,000 have transitioned to 100 per cent renewable electricity

“While there are some jurisdictions who have achieved 100 per cent renewable energy based on historic investment in hydroelectricity, the ACT will join a select few to have made the transition from a fossil fuel-dominated energy system,” Mr Barr said.

“A further four jurisdictions – the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway and Uganda – also expect to transition to 100 per cent renewable electricity during 2020.”

Mr Barr said the transition to renewable energy was an achievement that highlighted the ACT’s standing as the national leader in action against climate change.

“Reaching our 100 per cent renewable energy target is a significant moment, but more needs to be done,” he said.

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability, Shane Rattenbury said the ACT is recognised as a global leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and has some of the most ambitious emission reduction targets of any jurisdiction in the world.

The Australia Institute’s Climate of the Nation surveyed 1,960 Australians and found over two thirds (69 per cent) agreed that State and Territory Governments should put in place incentives for more renewable energy.
