Accessible tourism is about removing physical barriers, making travel and tourism destinations, products and services available to all, regardless of their age or physical or cognitive abilities. Making a splash in this category is Indigenous tourism company Saltwater Eco Tours on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast.

The company now offers accessible canoe tours specifically designed for individuals with mobility challenges, including wheelchair users. These journeys, which started in July, are held on the serene waters of the Mooloolah River.

Led by First Nations guides, participants glide through calm upstream waters, learning about diverse ecosystems, regeneration practices, and the deep cultural significance of these waterways to Gubbi Gubbi/Kabi Kabi Country.

Saltwater Eco Tours owner Simon Thornalley combines his passion for the ocean with his heritage, and admits that his life has always been guided by the ocean.

“My Indigenous heritage is from the Torres Strait and I’ve always felt this connection,” Simon says. “Everything works when I’m on the water. I’m a saltwater man through and through; saltwater is in my blood.”

Simon launched the Mooloolaba-based company in early 2020 with the vision of connecting people with Indigenous culture and the ocean through unique tourism experiences.

He stresses the accessibility and cultural connection in his saltwater ecotours. Simon designed them, particularly the canoe tours, to be inclusive, incorporating features like adaptive seating and paddles for people with limited mobility. Simon also highlights the importance of storytelling and sharing the rich culture and history of the Kabi Kabi people through these tours.

Accessible canoe journeys are being offered to wheelchair users and individuals with mobility challenges on the Mooloolah River by Saltwater Eco Tours.

Operating twice weekly from The Wharf Mooloolaba, these intimate canoe journeys feature six double canoes, each adorned with unique Aboriginal designs that tell their own cultural stories. The 90-minute tour features innovative canoes and pioneering equipment, making it easier for everyone to participate.

The accessibility features include custom hoists, adaptive seating and specialised paddles, ensuring a comfortable and inclusive experience for all adventurers on the water.

Simon’s deep-seated relationship with the water is woven into generations of knowledge and craftsmanship. His father was a timber boat builder, and from childhood, Simon was immersed in the art of shaping vessels from wood – an experience that instilled in him a love for working with his hands and an appreciation for the stories and spirit carried by the sea. Those early years sparked a lifelong calling to protect, honour and live in harmony with the ocean.

Simon’s family travelled up and down the Queensland coast until he turned six, when the Thornalleys settled in Mooloolaba. He later became a commercial diver, which enabled him to travel internationally.

“All of my experience I’ve had on the water, as well as my passion for Indigenous culture, that is where the business model grew from,” he said.

Saltwater Eco Tours is unlike other tourism experiences operating along the coast.

“The Indigenous cultural experience is the number one [priority], that is really what I wanted to encompass in the experience … an authentic local Indigenous experience.”

Simon has overcome challenges, sharing his experience of starting the business during the pandemic and navigating trials such as border closures and lack of support, emphasising the importance of persistence and passion.

Creating authentic and immersive experiences, his vision is to foster a deeper connection between people and the ocean, as well as with Indigenous culture and traditions. The tours are designed with a focus on sustainability, including partnerships with local communities and efforts to protect the environment.

“Our guided Saltwater Canoe Tours in partnership with Undumbi Culture will have you discovering the secrets of Mooloolah River beyond the main channel. In an intimate group setting led by a First Nations tour guide, you will explore the serene upstream surrounded by the sounds of nature, learn the significance of the diverse ecosystems, the importance of regeneration, and most of all, enjoy some peaceful time away from the hustle and bustle.”

Through his work, Simon bridges traditional wisdom with modern leadership, creating space for First Nations voices within the tourism and environmental sectors. His life’s journey – anchored in saltwater, timber boats, and cultural pride – reflects a deep and enduring commitment to caring for Country and inspiring others to walk gently on these lands and waters.
