The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) marked National Volunteer Week last week (17-23 May) by celebrating Aussies who give their time and skills to help those in need.

The Bureau’s Census Executive Director and National Spokesperson, Andrew Henderson said that according to 2016 Census data, over 3.6 million people said they had volunteered in the past year.

“National Volunteer Week is a good time to recognise our volunteers and acknowledge the important role the Census plays in providing a comprehensive picture of volunteering in Australia,” Mr Henderson said.

“The Census provides information on more than just the numbers of volunteers, it helps us understand their characteristics like where they live, how old they are, occupation and country of birth,” he said.

Mr Henderson said Census data was also vital for organisations that relied on volunteers as it informed where services and funding were needed most.

He said important community services relied on good quality data and the ABS was preparing to deliver the 2021 Census in August so that those services had up to date, comprehensive information.

“People will be able to complete the Census online, on their mobile device, or on paper,” he said.

“There will be options available for people who need assistance to complete their Census form including help from Census field staff, and phone and online help,” Mr Henderson said.
