The Australian Border Force’s multi-Agency taskforce, the Maritime Border Command has signed an agreement with the Singapore Navy to strengthen bilateral cooperation and share information related to civil maritime security activities.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recognises the value of Australia and Singapore’s relationship and aims to facilitate information sharing concerning White Shipping.

According to Maritime Border Force Commander, Rear Admiral Lee Goddard (pictured) White Shipping involves the sharing and exchanging of advance information regarding identity and movement of civil vessels, which make up the bulk of maritime traffic, many being vulnerable as targets or instruments of illegal acts.

Rear Admiral Goddard said information sharing around White Shipping would greatly improve both Singapore and Australia’s abilities to protect vessels within their respective waters.

“This agreement reinforces our already close relationship with Singapore and the knowledge gained further develops our capabilities,” Rear Admiral Goddard said.

“Australia and Singapore face similar civil maritime security challenges, and this agreement will allow our two countries to continue to build on a range of capabilities.”

He said the arrangement improved information sharing and collaboration and represented another aspect of Singapore’s strong relationship with Australia.

Commander of Singapore’s Maritime Security Task Force, Rear Admiral Seah Poh Yeen said Singapore and Australia had worked closely over many years to ensure their seas were kept safe and secure.

“The signing of this MOU reaffirms our close and long-standing ties, and further strengthens our collaboration to enhance maritime security in the region,” Rear Admiral Seah said.
