Losing a loved one is unbearable trauma, especially if you are thousands of kilometres away and unable to assist. Such is the case with June (Storm Reid, Twelve Years a Slave, A Wrinkle in Time), who is in Los Angeles. Her mother Grace (Nia Long, You People) disappears while on a week-long holiday with her new boyfriend Kevin (Ken Leung, Keeping the Faith) in Colombia.
Strong-willed, sometimes stubborn and impatient, 18-year-old June is ready to start a new life at college, but admittedly, is annoyed about being looked after by Grace’s friend Heather (Amy Landecker). However, when June goes to the airport to pick-up Grace and Kevin they are nowhere to be seen. She contacts the authorities and is frustrated by a seeming lack of progress by the FBI.
Since the search for answers is hindered by international red tape, June feels the answer lies in the digital world she inhabits every day. Living in a social media era, she creatively uses all the latest technology tools (Google Maps, Facebook, Facetime, Taskrabbit) at her fingertips to try and find her mother before it’s too late. Some unlikely allies also come to the rescue.
Missing puts a new spin on the classic kidnap story by making the child the detective, but expect all the same twists, turns and emotional ups-and-downs. It’s a roller-coaster mystery thriller that takes place entirely online. Before long, June’s digital sleuthing leads her down a twisting rabbit hole of secrets and lies. As she digs deeper, she raises more questions than answers … and when June unravels secrets about her mom, she discovers that she never really knew her at all. Even Kevin has a dark past.
The diverse group of actors reflect the real world as June puts her Internet savvy to good use.
