A senior Public Servant has defended the attendance of several of his colleagues at the National Congress of Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF Party during working hours.
Permanent Secretary in the Department of Information, Nick Mangwana said he could see nothing wrong with the practice.
The three-day Congress virtually brought Government business to a halt as all Cabinet Ministers, Secretaries, Heads of Departments and Parastatals were instructed to attend.
Mr Mangwana (pictured) said the bureaucrats had been invited to the Congress “to help us understand the policy thrusts which we have to implement in Government”.
His comments came after President Emmerson Mnangagwa told the conference Zanu-PF “will continue to rule the land of our forefathers”.
“Our systems are oiled. Election materials and resources are in place to mount a roaring campaign for a thunderous victory of our party,” Mr Mnangagwa said.
“The people’s revolution is ongoing and unstoppable.”
Mr Mnangagwa has been endorsed as Zanu-PF’s sole Presidential candidate in this year’s election, and will likely square off with Opposition Citizens Coalition for Change Leader, Nelson Chamisa, whom he narrowly beat in the 2018 disputed election.
The President also told delegates that the party’s constitution would be amended to align it with the new socio-economic and political realities.
