BoM drops bundle over brand change

The Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) has addressed recent reports of cultural issues within the organisation, leaning into its legacy as Australia’s most trusted source of reliable and responsive weather forecasts.

The reports of cultural issues at BoM from former employees followed the Bureau’s recent attempt at a “brand refresh” which asked media outlets to ditch its ‘BoM’ acronym.

BoM has since decided to leave it up to the public and the media to choose how it should be referred to.

In a statement, BoM said it wanted to address the “inaccurate statements” in honour of the professionalism and dedication of its team, and its deep respect for the position of trust the Bureau held within the community

“Like any large organisation, there are times when we don’t get it right,” BoM said.

“Recent public commentary about the name of our organisation is no reflection on our capability and devotion to keeping Australians safe and informed.”

It said recent Australian Public Service censuses, independent culture surveys, and organisational pulse checks of BoM’s entire team had reported a strong workplace and safety culture within the organisation.

“We know the changes we have been making to improve our services to the community have been challenging for some of our people,” BoM said.

“We continue to work hard and to invest in their ongoing welfare and development,” it said.

“We take all workplace issues seriously.

“We are committed to promoting a healthy and productive workplace and are continually looking at new ways to support our dedicated teams.”

The Bureau said it provided one of the most widely used services of Government and now employed more meteorologists, hydrologists and climatologists than any other time in its history.
