City Services has set its sights on illegal dumpers, launching a blitz to catch people who are not disposing of their household or business waste thoughtfully.
Announcing its blitz, City Services encouraged people to report any offences they saw through the Fix My Street portal.
“Illegal dumping spoils our environment, can be dangerous and strong penalties apply to people caught,” City Services said.
“Cleaning up after illegal dumpers costs ratepayers and the Government about $3 million a year and is done at the expense of other land management activities,” it said.
“The ACT Government has set up cameras at multiple illegal dumping hot spots across Canberra to help deter and detect offenders.”
City Services sad Canberrans had many options to reuse, donate or dispose of unwanted items.
It said Government provided a free bulky waste collection service which allowed households to book one collection per year of unused or unwanted items.
“The free bulky waste collection service provides a convenient and accessible way to dispose of bulky unwanted items and saves a trip to the tip,” the Directorate said.
“If you live in an apartment or townhouse with a shared waste enclosure, contact your body corporate or managing agent to make a booking on your behalf.”
