The Department of Communities, Housing and the Digital Economy says rental property owners can now apply for an initiative that aims to increase the supply of homes available to Queenslanders in need.
Expressions of interest for the Help to Home initiative are open until 31 October, with the Department fast-tracking approvals to get people into homes sooner.
Minister for Housing, Leeanne Enoch said Help to Home was a great opportunity for Queensland property owners to help provide a home for Queenslanders in need.
“Since being announced in late July, 31 expressions of interest have been received and 19 properties have already been allocated to households,” Ms Enoch said.
“We have allocated $126,000 for head-leases so far, which has seen individuals and households from the Social Housing Register allocated to homes in Keperra and Beenleigh.”
She said there were immense housing pressures right across the country and strong interstate migration had added extra pressure in Queensland.
“Head-leasing under Help to Home is aimed at increasing social housing supply with an allocation of $40 million to head-lease up to 1,000 private market properties over the next two years,” Ms Enoch said.
“The two-year head-leasing arrangement provides certainty for property owners, with a guaranteed income for two years, paid three months in advance, and then every quarter subject to the terms of the lease.”
She said the Department was working quickly to assess other expressions of interest and get more people into more homes sooner.
