Electric vehicles lead the way to ACT homes

An information guide on delivering Electric Vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in new developments and retrofitting existing developments has been released by the Environmental Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate (EPSDD).

Launching its Electric Vehicle Ready guide, EPSDD said the EV transition had already begun in the Territory with 1,300 EVs registered in the ACT in 2021.

“This number is expected to reach at least 25,000 in 2030,” EPSDD said.

“Studies have shown that most EV owners prefer to charge their vehicles at home or at work as this is where cars are already parked,” it said.

“In the ACT, many existing commercial and multi-unit residential buildings are not yet ready for EV charging.”

EPSDD said that being EV ready meant ensuring a building was ready to accommodate future EV charging infrastructure.

“It involves making sure that a parking space includes appropriate wiring, a covered outlet, and a final connection point for an EV charger,” the Directorate said.

“While retrospectively installing appropriate infrastructure into existing buildings provides EV owners with a convenient charging option, incorporating EV infrastructure during the planning and building phase of new multi-unit residential and commercial projects is a much more cost effective and practical charging option.”

It said the installation of EV ready infrastructure in new and existing buildings was not currently mandatory in the ACT.

However, the directorate said the infrastructure would be mandatory in new developments (multi-unit residential and townhouses) when the new planning system was introduced in the ACT in 2023.
