Wellbeing SA is hoping to inspire people to stay active as temperatures drop with tips on how to get moving, dressing for the weather and ‘magical’ winter walks.
In a statement, Wellbeing SA said that while it could feel harder to get outdoors for a walk during cold weather, a 10-minute winter stroll could offer a refreshing change of pace and work wonders for the mind and body.
It said it was best to start slow and invest in cold weather gear.
“Trial a five or 10 minute walk before gradually increasing in length,” the Agency said.
“If you are dressed warmly, you will be more comfortable and be able to enjoy the walk more.”
It said clothing tips for winter walks included wearing multiple light layers with a wind proof outer layer; covering ears, hands and head; wearing closed-in footwear; and wearing bright colours or reflective strips to be more easily visible to drivers cyclists and other road users in low light.
“Make walks fun – listen to podcasts or music that lifts you up or use your walks as a time to call your friends and family to catch up,” it said.
Wellbeing SA said it was a good idea to walk with others, even a local walking group, and to set a steps goal.
“Join the free 10,000 Steps program to see how tracking your steps helps motivate you to move more,” it said.
The Agency said the ‘magical winter walks’ would get people moving included the Mount Lofty Botanic Garden in the Adelaide Hills; Ghost Mushroom Lane near Mount Gambier; Illuminate Adelaide in July; Alpine Winter Festival in Glenelg; and Willunga Almond Blossom Festival in late July.
