South Australian Departments and Agencies are marking National Reconciliation Week this week (27 May – 3 June) with a range of events and activities to strengthen respectful relationships between the Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Announcing the events, the Department of the Premier and Cabinet (DPC) said the Week was an opportunity to explore and celebrate the unique histories and cultures of Aboriginal people and help make change.
DPC said that this year’s theme Be Brave. Make Change. was a challenge to all Australians—individuals, families, communities, organisations and Government—to Be Brave and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation so we can Make Change for the benefit of all Australians.
“Government Agencies and organisations across South Australia are hosting events and participating in activities to celebrate National Reconciliation Week and strengthen respectful relationships between the Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples,” the Department said.
On board with the Week’s activities, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) and Adelaide Metro said Reconciliation was an ongoing journey that reminded people that, while generations of Australians had fought hard for meaningful changes, future gains were likely to take just as much, if not more, effort.
“In recognition of this, we have the privilege of showcasing artworks created by students from the South Australian Aboriginal Secondary Training Academy (SAASTA) program from across the State on one of our trams,” Adelaide Metro said in a statement.
“This striking tram will be operating through the city and along the Glenelg tram line until 18 July,” it said.
