A new Committee inquiry has been established by the Legislative Assembly to examine the rapidly increasing cost of renting or buying a home in Canberra.
Chaired of the Assembly’s Economy and Gender and Economic Equality Committee, Leanne Castley MLA said the inquiry into Housing and Rental Affordability was calling for submissions from the public, industry groups, peak bodies, think tanks, academics, and economists.
“We look forward to hearing from as many people as possible about the rapidly increasing cost of renting or buying a home in Canberra,” Ms Castley said.
According to its Terms of Reference, the Inquiry is to examine the causes of vacancies in properties around the Territory and how reducing residential property vacancy could support housing and rental availability and affordability.
It will also look at the current economic and regulatory settings for addressing residential and non-residential property vacancies, and whether these settings may contribute to the number of vacant properties.
The Inquiry is to evaluate whether additional economic and regulatory settings (such as a vacancy tax) should be considered and examine how reducing non-residential property vacancy could support improved economic outcomes.
