Malaysia’s powerful Public Service union, the Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (CUEPACS) has called for the minimum monthly salary of Government employees to be raised to RM1,800 ($A568) citing the rising cost of living.
President of CUEPACS, Adnan Mat said the current salary of Public Servants was “not comfortable” while the price of goods was increasing.
“This situation is unfair for Civil Servants with the income they’re earning,” Datuk Adnan (pictured) said.
“We know the Government has approved an increase of RM1,500 ($A473) for Government-linked company employees, but we don’t believe this is enough.”
He said the Government’s award also narrowed the gap between the salary of new employees and that of longer-serving employees, so there was also a need for salary adjustments at higher levels.
In a separate development, Director-General of the Public Service, Mohd Shafiq Abdullah said he has amended guidelines for Government officials giving or receiving gifts in an effort to combat corruption.
“It gives a new definition of the value involved, while strengthening the mechanism for monitoring and accepting gifts,” Datuk Seri Mohd Shafiq said.
“An effort like this is always being carried out in the Public Service, so the public should also share the commitment and responsibility to fight corruption.”
There have been mounting complaints against officials, with claims bribes must be given to obtain even the simplest of Government services.
