Canberrans are being reminded that if they hold an ACT driver’s licence, certain illnesses and injuries must be declared to Access Canberra.
Issuing the reminder, City Services said Canberrans were required to report any long-term or permanent injury or illness that may affect their ability to drive safely.
“This is to help keep you and everyone on our ACT roads safe,” City Services said.
“If you become aware of a medical issue that impairs your ability to drive safely, you must notify Access Canberra by emailing [email protected] or calling 13 22 81,” it said.
“If you have a medical condition and aren’t sure if you need to report it, please call 13 22 81 or discuss the condition with your medical practitioner.”
City Services said some of the illnesses injuries that must be declared included:
- Cardiovascular conditions
- Dementia
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Blackouts
- Other neurological conditions e.g. cognitive impairment
- Musculoskeletal disability e.g. the loss of a limb
- Psychiatric conditions
- Sleep disorders e.g. sleep apnoea
- Any other condition that a doctor indicated may impact ability to drive.
In a statement, Access Canberra said it may ask people to demonstrate their fitness to drive, which could involve a medical examination or a driving assessment by an occupational therapist to ensure the person could safely operate a vehicle.
“If you have a medical condition or injury that affects your driving, Access Canberra may add a condition to your licence or in some circumstances may suspend or cancel your driver licence,” Access Canberra said.
