New cycle route puts e-scooters on a roll

Canberrans can now ride their e-scooters between the existing Belconnen and Central Canberra regions through the C3 cycle route and shared paths over Bruce Ridge.

Announced by Transport Canberra, the opening of the route is the first step in the 2022 shared e-scooter scheme expansion for the ACT.

“This expansion follows feedback received from the community that e-scooters were welcomed by Canberrans as a useful transport option and that people would like to see them available more widely,” Transport Canberra said.

“E-scooters are great for short trips, or in combination with public transport for longer trips,” it said.

“The expansion also includes an extension of the Belconnen operating area to include GIO Stadium, AIS Arena, CIT and the Calvary Hospital.”

Transport Canberra said to cater for this increased operating area, there would also be an expansion to 1,900 available devices.

“We have worked with the scheme operators, local institutional stakeholders and the Belconnen Community Council to ensure the expansion meets the needs of local communities and major destinations,” it said.

The Agency said no-ride zones had been established at Radford College, Haydon Retirement Community, inside GIO stadium and Gossan Hill; a permanent speed limit of 15 km/h was in place at Calvary hospital; and a temporary slow zone (15 km/hr) would be in place outside GIO stadium for 90 minutes before and after major events.

“To ensure our city is kept tidy, 18 new parking sites have been identified and e-scooters will be deployed at those on a daily basis,” it said.

“No-parking zones have been identified to prevent e-scooters being left in and around nature reserves.”
