South Australians are to see fewer single-use plastics at events this year since Green Industries SA released an updated guide to help organisers reduce waste.
Launching the Waste and Recycling at Events and Venues: Guidelines for making a difference last Friday (11 March), Manager Policy Reform at Green Industries SA, Jessica Wundke said the Guide featured new information, including advice on contracting waste management and recycling services; tips; tools; workbooks and example signage.
“This Guide is an essential download for events and venues of all sizes, looking to address their carbon footprint and reduce costs while replacing the waste,” Ms Wundke said.
She said there were five main components to a successful and effective waste management strategy at events or venues.
These are:
* Avoid waste by reducing the number of unnecessary items brought to the event and the amount of waste created during the event;
* Incorporate an organic recycling stream;
* Have a comprehensive waste bin system for the public and vendors;
* Use clear and effective signage; and
* Collect and evaluate waste and recycling data.
“Avoid waste by reducing the number of unnecessary items brought to the event and the amount of waste created during the event,” Ms Wundke said.
“As well as reducing the potential for littering and contamination of recycling systems, this cuts the cost of waste management.
“Require vendors to only use reusable or compostable service ware, contract specialist providers to take material to a commercial composting facility and, where practical, partner with food rescue organisations to collect quality surplus food.”
Ms Wundke said bin stations should be co-located in the right places with regular monitoring from event staff or volunteers to assist with correct disposal of waste.
“A good bin system is ineffective if it’s not clear what goes where,” she said.
“People who want to do the right thing need to know how.”
Ms Wundke said understanding what did and did not work could help in developing better and more cost-effective strategies for future events.
