Hospital upgrade making healthy progress

The demolition and excavation stage of the Canberra Hospital Expansion project has been completed with the installation of the first of two electric tower cranes.

Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith said the cranes’ installation signalled the beginning of the next stage of works to transform healthcare services for Canberrans.

Ms Stephen-Smith said the construction stage would support about 500 jobs and help the Territory’s economic recovery from COVID-19.

“Now that the demolition and excavation stage is complete, construction of the state-of-the-art, eight-storey Critical Services Building is getting underway,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“This first tower crane is a symbol of the massive effort required to bring this hospital expansion to life,” she said.

“The Canberra Hospital Expansion is one key part of our plan to ensure all Canberrans have access to the health services they need, when they need them.”

Ms Stephen-Smith said she was grateful for the engagement of the Garran community in the project, “and especially Garran Primary School students and teachers, who have short-listed names for the two cranes for Canberrans to vote on”.

The Minister said people could help ‘Name the Cranes’ by voting on the shortlist of 10 suggestions, which will be published on the ACT Government’s YourSay website later this month.

She said the winning would be announced in April.
