Designs have been finalised and tenders are now open for the construction of a new café and function centre at the Perth Zoo.
Announcing the plan, Minister for the Environment, Reece Whitby said the project marked the first major milestone in the Zoo’s masterplan.
Mr Whitby said the new café would be built in the heart of the Zoo, providing a variety of food and beverage options, alfresco dining opportunities as well as additional Zoo visitor amenities, all in an accessible and convenient central location.
“The separate function centre will be built on the western boundary of the Zoo with its own entrance off Labouchere Road,” he said.
“This venue will enable the community to interact with the Zoo in different ways, providing contemporary facilities on the Zoo’s premises for events, corporate functions, seminars and weddings.”
Mr Whitby said this was the first stage in the blueprint for Western Australia’s State Zoo and the masterplan was funded through a $43.5 million Government grant.
“It is so exciting to see the Perth Zoo masterplan progressing,” he said.
“It is an ambitious and historic project that will put the Zoo at the forefront of conservation work, education and animal experience globally.”
The Minister said the two new facilities would significantly improve how the people of Western Australia experienced the Zoo.
“It will open the doors for more people to come to this inner-city oasis to connect with nature,” Mr Whitby said.
