The Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (PM&C) has revealed that the nation’s first Data Strategy and supporting Action Plan have been designed to develop a system to be used by all Australians and better support the use of Government data.

In a statement, PM&C said the Australian Data Strategy outlined how the value of data could be maximised to benefit consumers, businesses, Government and researchers, while demonstrating how the Government was keeping data safe and appropriately managing its use.

“It shows how the use of data will be made easier through greater transparency about what data is available, appropriate data integration and improved data capability and data management,” the Department said.

“The Strategy was developed across Government in consultation with private, research and not-for-profit sectors.”

Minister for Employment, Workforce, Skills, Small and Family Business, Stuart Robert said the Strategy set a clear path for Australia’s data system over the next four years, and complemented the Government’s broader Digital Economy Strategy and Digital Government Strategy.

“The Data Strategy is part of our commitment to deliver better services to all Australians and will power our national ambition to become a modern, data-driven society by 2030,” Mr Robert said.

“It outlines how we will create, use and share data across all levels of Government, while maintaining the right safeguards to keep this data secure,” he said.

Members of the public are invited to submit feedback on the Strategy by 30 June 2022.
